Let’s stop everything! The most unbridled rock musical on the planet is back in Paris. First the Théâtre du Petit Saint-Martin, then the Casino de Paris, it’s now the turn of Lido2Paris to welcome The Rocky Horror Show after more than thirty years without a landing in the French capital.

While the success of this cult musical is undeniable, with its cinema version still playing to sold-out audiences in France and elsewhere, there’s no need to bring your newspaper or grains of rice, but you can be sure of a truly immersive experience. The atmosphere is such that you’ll start by tapping your feet to each of the Rocky Horror Show‘s essential hits, before finally getting up to join in and dance to The Time Warp! Have we ever seen such an electric crowd in Paris on a Sunday evening (when we were there)? Well, the English have a lot to live up to!

There’s no shortage of laughter at the sometimes absurd, sometimes below-the-belt lines. Special mention must go to the opening of the second act, which dares to do anything. This parody of Z-movies welcomes bad taste in both the subject matter and the simplicity of the sets. The show even allows itself a few adaptations for French audiences, who don’t mind the extra vulgarity.

The lighting design brilliantly transports us into this world of extravagance. Let’s also applaud the performance of an orchestra concealed high above the stage, which thrills us and plays a full part in the collective hysteria with its shocking bass tones. A score that’s as crazy as it is perfect. Mastery in chaos!

As for the characters, while each has a distinct personality and vocal identity, we’re delighted by Frank’n’Furter played by Stephen WEBB, whose crooner voice is unexpected and outrageously addictive. Columbia seduces us with the number of octaves she’s capable of, and a performance that annoys as much as it makes us laugh, thanks to a voice that insidiously penetrates our conches. The narrator oscillates between friendly tone and austerity. Finally, who could look away from Rocky, whose fall of the back would open the coffin of a man who died without his hands?

A few reservations, however. The first is that the choreography is a little out of place. The second is that the show is too short at a time when our world and its worries no longer exist. Two hours is just too much!

Dare to venture to Lido2Paris and let loose to the rhythms of a rock as gleaming as it is frenzied. Put on your virtue at the door! Let yourself go in a flood of explosive pleasure, and make way for the madness!

Synopsis

The Rocky Horror Show is the story of two squeaky clean college kids – Brad and his fiancée Janet. When by a twist of fate, their car breaks down outside a creepy mansion whilst on their way to visit their former college professor, they meet the charismatic Dr Frank’n’Furter. It is an adventure they’ll never forget, filled with fun, frolics, frocks, and frivolity.

Directed by Christopher Luscombe The Rocky Horror Show is ready to thrill you with fun and naughty moments, and features timeless classics including Sweet Transvestite, Damn it Janet, and of course, the pelvic thrusting show stopping Time Warp.
